For centuries Indian Classical Music had been exclusive to gharanas, where performances were recorded by only the elite and nobles. Passed on by generations, these rare recordings are often found gathering dust in the cupboards of music lovers. SaReGaMa, India’s premier Music Company, feared that these recordings would fade away trapped in analog tapes. Thus the need to find and digitally re-master these gems. But how does one find these recordings, let alone convince their owners to part with them? Presenting Keeping The Legend Alive - An initiative to immortalize the legends of Indian Classical. Using the tapes of Late Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, 5 musical portraits were created. Each portrait was weaved using 1100 metres of tape and played a digitally re-mastered version of his ragas. These Portraits were then exhibited at Sawai Gandharva, India's Largest Classical Music Festival. Thousands of music lovers were awed by the portraits and many came forward with tapes of rare recordings that they possessed. SaReGaMa now has 230 recordings of these masterpieces and work is underway to make them eternal, along with portraits that will immortalize the likes of Ustad Zakir Hussain, Pandit Ravi Shankar, Ustad Bismillah Khan and various other legends.
